Dyptich Images

As you can see, in the first image she is holding a sign that says "free hugs." In the second one, she is hugging a friend.

In the first image, she is looking through a pair of binoulars. In the second one, she see's a close up of her own face.

In the first image, she's pretending to hit a ball. In the second one, she's looking into the distance to see where it went.

Object Series

For my object series, I chose to photograph my favorite pair of shoes. My initial object was a scarf, but I couldn't really come up with ways to manipulate it, so I changed my mind. The heels were pretty easy to photograph because I could move them around and position them in different ways.

Photo Journaling

These are two of my favorite images from my photo book. I like the one on the left of the parrot because of the vibrant colors. The parrot posed at the perfect time, right when I took the shot. I like the one on the right of the turtles because the green algae kind of stands out.

Surreal Montage

For my surreal montage, I wanted to create something that you wouldn't necessarily be able to see in real life. You can't actually capture these pictures using a camera. The one that I took was the picture itself (in a mirror). The pictures I got from the internet are each of the ones shown in the lens of the camera. But I didn't get a chance to scan anything. Overall, I'm not really satisfied with it. I could have done something a little more creative and I feel like the picture on the bottom left doesn't really belong.

Color Theory Photo Walk

For my color theory pictures, I chose to take pictures of nature (flowers, trees, etc.) I liked these the most because they have a high contrast and make certain colors stand out.

Surrealism Theme

For my surrealism photo, I want to create a scene that should not really exist in the real world. I don't exactly know what I want to portray but I don't want the picture to look too fake or as if I used photoshop too much.

Surrealist Artists

Rene Magritte was born in Lessines, in the province of Hainaut, on November 21, 1898. His earliest oil painting dates from about 1915, and was done in an impressionistic style. In 1926, however, The Lost Jockey was the first surreal oil painting he produced. He held the first exhibition in Brussels in 1927. He moved to Paris and was soon in touch with André Breton, Max Ernst, Francis Picabia, Marcel Duchamp and others, and took part in a Surrealist group. In his artwork, he combined his realistic depiction of everyday objects and put his own twist to it. He also combined real objects with abstract figurines. His art is shown in numerous exhibitions of surrealist art, all over the world.


Jerry N. Uelsmann was born in Detroit on June 11, 1934. He received his B.F.A. degree at the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1957 and his M.S. and M.F.A at Indiana University in 1960. He first began teaching photography at the University of Florida in Gainesville in 1960. Uelsmann's work has been displayed in more than 100 individual shows all over the world over the past forty years. He's best known for his black and white images which he layered pretty skillfully without photoshop.

Title: Tree House

Date: 1982

Description: This is a black and white image of a tree stump which has a house grafted to it. In the background, there is a hill and a few more houses. The sky is a grayish color, indicating rain.
Analysis: This image is reasonably symmetrical. There isn't too much negative space and your focus goes immediately towards the house on the tree stump. Just by looking at it, you can tell it took a great deal of time and precision to achieve that effect.

Interpretation: This picture kind of reminds me of a childhood tree house. However, unlike the playfulness and comfort you would experience in a childhood tree house, this picture displays shattered windows and a dull atmosphere (the sky). It shows a great contrast between the two.

Judgement: Overall, I think this was a very successful image. The fact that it is black and white gives it  that much more feeling. Also, the fact that he didn't use photoshop to produce this image, and it still managed to look realistic, amazes me.

Title: Hegel's Holiday

Date: 1958

Description: This is an image of a glass of water simply sitting on top of an umbrella.

Analysis: Unlike many paintings you see today, this one doesn't really follow any rules. It's just a plain old umbrella floating in the air, with a glass of water balancing on top. The background is one solid color. 

Interpretation: My interpretation of the picture is that it portrays an object whose function is to repel water (umbrella), and an object that contains water. This is a significant contradiction/contrast that took me a while to figure out.

Judgement: I think this is a really successful piece of art. Without using much, it portrays a pretty deep meaning. It's an illusion that really catches your eye and makes you think.

Selective Coloring

During the process of taking pictures for this assignment, I ran out of ideas. I took several shots of different things but none of them were coming out the way I wanted them to. This image was actually the last one that I took and I loved it. It took me a while to get the ring to stay, but eventually I got the shot I wanted.

30 Day Challenge

Hockney Project

For this landscape picture, I actually went to Merril Park to shoot. It was really cold so I didn't get to take as many pictures as I had originally planned. But I cropped certain parts of the same picture and moved them around and changed the colors in curves. The hardest part to work with was the duck. There was actually only one, and it kept swimming around. It was hard to put the pictures together so that the duck wouldn't overlap itself in another picture. But overall, I think it was successful.

Photo Walk #2

Partner Portraiture

For this assignment, I came up with a few ideas but I liked this one the best. I wanted to make it look as if the subject was hiding. First, I shot a few pictures of her sitting crouched on the floor. Then I went home and tried to make a cluttered looking dressing table. I personally don't think it turned out as successful as I had hoped it would. I should have tried harder to match the contrast of the background with her.

Recreate Your Childhood

I chose this picture for this project because it really shows a side of me that people don't often get to see. I also think it's really funny because my parents shaved my head when I was really little, so that it would grow out "better." I think the pictures look pretty similar, except for the fact that I'm not bald now, and I'm not as chubby as I was. My only issue is that I should have tried to get my whole face in the frame in the second picture. Otherwise, I think it is pretty successful.

Assignment Portrait Series

Self Portrait Series

A portrait series doesn’t always have to be a picture of a person’s face. This assignment has definitely given me the opportunity to expand on the way I take pictures. From choosing a theme to picking poses, I really took my time and thought about it. I didn’t want to simply take pictures of my face, so I chose to have a theme, which is Indian clothing. It really signifies simplicity, and who I am and where I come from. I wanted it to portray my culture. I think my project was successful and it came out just how I had imagined it. It’s bright with all the colors, yet simple without overdoing it.

Photo Walk #1

This is one of my favorite pictures that I took on the photo walk. It's an interesting angle and I like that the focus is only on the first locker.

A White Blanket of Pure Evil

I personally dislike snow very much. It just makes everything more difficult; you can't go out anywhere, it's cold, and the weather in general is just gloomy. 

Artist Inspirations

Steve McCurry is a photojournalist. He is probably best known for the image, “Afghan Girl,” which was originally in the National Geographic magazine. It is known as the most recognized photograph in the world. He has taken several striking pictures, including this one.

Andy Warhol was one of the most influential contemporary artists. He used mass-production techniques to create his work. Warhol erased the traditional distinctions between fine art and popular culture to create his own unique interpretation which I admire very much.

Annie Leibovitz is a well known American portrait photographer. She has taken many pictures of many celebrities for Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair magazine.

Tyra Banks is also well known for her creative fashion photographs. She takes pictures of models on her show, America’s Next Top Model.

Leonardo Da Vinci lived in a time period called the Renaissance. He was multitalented and most of his work was done in the realist style.
